Administration Announces Federal Worker Job Cuts as Shutdown Nears Third Week
Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker layoffs on Friday, making good on prior threats linked to the continuing US government shutdown, which is now poised to stretch into its third straight week.

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “reductions in force have begun,” referring to the government’s process for terminating staff.
While the official provided no details on which agencies were impacted, a treasury spokesperson confirmed that layoff warnings had been issued within that department. Additionally, a Department of Homeland Security representative noted that layoffs would also occur at the CISA. Also, a labor organization representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.
Labor Reaction and Court Actions
Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “severe consequences” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.
This is shameful that the administration has exploited the government shutdown as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who provide essential functions to the public nationwide,” stated Everett Kelley, who leads the AFGE.
The AFL-CIO responded to the announcement, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”
Political Standoff and Budget Dispute
Lawmakers from the Democratic party have declined to support a GOP-supported bill to restore funding unless it contains provisions related to health policy. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, indicating the standoff is unlikely to be resolved before then.
During a media briefing, the Republican House speaker, Mike Johnson, blasted Senate Democrats for rejecting the GOP bill, which was approved in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

An analysis contended that a funding lapse restricts the authority of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any permanent layoffs need to have been started before the shutdown began.
Impact on Workers
These terminations took place on the same day that government employees got only a partial paycheck covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding expired at the beginning of the month.
A public service advocate, the head of the advocacy group, condemned the gridlock’s impact on federal employees.
“It is wrong to make government staff bear the burden because our leaders in the legislature and the administration have failed to keep our federal operations running,” the advocate stated. The air traffic controllers, VA nurses, wildland firefighters and safety officials are not at fault for this government shutdown.”
A notable point is that members of Congress and senior White House leaders are still receiving salaries amid the shutdown.
