The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were central to campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and disinformation.
