In a notable move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and deadly youth-led protests that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.
A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the deal was signed.
The late summer revolt was sparked by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a spark for underlying resentment stemming from years of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.

According to the formal agreement, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key figure in Nepal's current political shift. He was instrumental in forming the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved.

In a related development, the current interim prime minister recently held consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the protests.
