Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise programs.

Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying these drugs must be informed of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to starting weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

The team point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically have a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Disease?

Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs describe a powerful return of hunger.

"It was like something that goes on and you become starving," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on integrated behavioural changes.
